Daydreams
It is imperative to know that each of these works is a portrait. Even in the figurative pieces, however, the focus is not a face or expression, but rather a state of mind. These ought to be complex yet delicate to visually hold, making the vivid temperatures of oil paint and softness of graphite ideal tools. The skies rendered in each piece then work as a vehicle of metaphor for the mind of each portrait. In the same way the wind carries water molecules that adhere to one another, building and building until rain pours and lightning crashes, so too do synapses flare and interweave to form our emotions, thoughts, and finally actions.
Minds and skies also share an endlessness and sanctity simply by existing. The holiness of the mind lies in the significance of consciousness. When minds think, feel or imagine, they create in endless landscapes, and what is more godly than creation? Meanwhile, the sky’s sacredness comes from its physical presence. It serves as a constant, holy reminder in the form of a celestial expanse sitting just above us, saying, “everything you are occupies less than a speck of this cosmic scheme”. However, despite this clear separation between the cosmos and our humanity, we find it so natural to attach earthly concepts to the heavens. We look for objects and animals in the clouds, we name celestial bodies, and in every corner of the world we can see where humans have blamed the weather on the mood of God(s). In our earliest attempts for understanding, we took creation itself and tried to relay it through our most natural vocabulary, and ended up with totemism, the most prolific of ancient religious concepts. And, throughout all that time, what we see in the clouds has always been a reflection.
